I’ve got coffee tomorrow with Charles Cranfield, the giant of NT studies here at Durham from the last generation. I thought I’d ask the blogging world what people would they would want to ask him. What are your thoughts?

Any thoughts on Paul’s connections with Jewish wisdom traditions as a governing paradigm vis-a-vis Hellenistic philosophies?
I admit my selfishness in asking; such a discussion is intimately related to my Master’s thesis. While writing my thesis, I found very little push for the wisdom connections.

I’d like to ask him whether, in the light of more recent scholarship, he now thinks he took a too obviously reformed perspective in his commentary on Romans, and where he might have changed his mind.

Ben,
1. Obliquely from Doug – what has he changed his mind on since his Romans commentary?
2. What does he think is the best recent Romans commentary and why?
3. What year was he born? (I need to know this for my Master’s Course on Romans that I’m teaching in August, “Romans in the Reformed Tradition: From Calvin to Cranfield and Beyond”).

I would like to ask him:
1. What does he think of the New Perspective?
2.What does he think of Paul and Politics?
3.Where does he feel Pauline Studies will go in the future and how can be get beyond the log-jam between the Old and New Perspectives?

I would also ask him his view of the NPP in general. Look like a lot of people would like to know about that.

[...] Monday, 23 June 2008 Coffee with Charles Cranfield Posted by Ben under Durham, Paul and His Interpreters At CK Barrett’s 90th birthday last year, someone mentioned that they were sad that Charles (aka C.E.B.) Cranfield wasn’t able to make it. He’s just a year or so older than Kingsley, but can’t make it around as well. John Barclay mentioned that Professor Cranfield does like to have students over, so I finally got around to asking for his info to have coffee. He was kind enough to invite me over, and we had a nice chat about my studies and his thoughts on theology, plus I asked a few questions offered up by readers here. [...]

Thanks for the questions! I tried to bring up most of them.
