I just had to steal this from my wife’s blog:
Here in England there is no phone number rhythm…it drives me crazy. I mean, in the US it is always (972) xxx.xxxx. Here it could be (o191) xxx xxxx or 0191x xx xx xx or 0191x xxx xxx or (0191) xxxx xxx, etc. Honestly, could there be any more choices?
So, when I saw this…it made me laugh hysterically.

Odd…I just remember them as three then four for 0191 numbers: 0191 334 3500 etc.. This works for most codes of major cities with four digit codes and the whole of the North East. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think and speak like this when giving out an 0191 number. Perhaps I speak to odd people!

It’s funny that you should mention that because I got a letter today from my bank with two phone numbers listed like this: 08457 XX XX XX and the second 01793 XXXXXX.
I think the difference is that when speaking there is usually the rythm you mention but not always as is evidenced by the letter I got.
I don’t think the variety is a bad thing. It’s just different from where I was brought up so I thought it would be interesting to describe for others.
