Ehrman and Wallace had a debate 4-5 April 2008 on the textual reliability of the New Testament for the the Greer-Heard lectureship at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Here’s a summary at Reclaiming the Mind. In addition, Tim Ricchuiti gives summaries of Michael Holmes, Dale Martin, David Parker, and William Warren.

Hey Ben, when will you be done with your thesis?

Lord willing, August 2009. At least I hope to submit by then with the viva 3 months later. So PhD will hopefully be in hand by January 2010.

[Sorry to abuse your Wallace v Ehrman post like this!]
Do you know Dr. David Wilkinson at St John’s? I’ve been emailing with him regarding the possibility of post-grad research (with him as my supervisor). He seems like a really good guy. But let me ask you a question: so my aim is to teach philosophy and apologetics at a small Bible college in America. My thesis will (hopefully) be on God’s relationship to time, a very philosophical topic. But do you think earning the PhD from Wilkinson’s department, theology and religion, will permit such a career? If so, what possibilities are there for working around this problem? Thanks!

I’m happy for any signal that somebody reads this!
David is golden. His wife is our pastor, and we know them quite well. You couldn’t go wrong with him as a supervisor–super intelligent but also very pastoral, with a great family.
I’m not sure what roadblocks you think this degree would set up for teaching. I would think that it would give you a little broader scope for teaching since it’d be from a university rather than a confessional school, but with a confessional atmosphere if you seek it out. Perhaps if you spelled out the problem you’re thinking of more I could answer better. I’m a fan of Durham and David, so I’d recommend it here.

Hi Ben,
I suppose I could’ve made my question clearer. My worry is that earning a doctorate from a THEOLOGY department will hinder my hopes of teaching in a PHILOSOPHY and APOLOGETICS department. This could be a totally unfounded worry, I don’t know.
I’m supposed to phone Dr. Wilkinson this Thursday. He already confirmed that my residing in America is no problem, I’ll just visit Durham two or three times annually.

Ok, so I’m slow. I wouldn’t think that that should give much trouble. On one hand, smaller colleges tend to expect more breadth b/c they aren’t big enough to allow too much specialisation. For instance, the people that taught philosophy at Ouachita when I was there had a theological background. But even more importantly, your proven competence from your thesis work (philosophy) is as determinative as the department in your degree is from (theology).
You’ll have a free room to stay in whenever you need to come over!

Hey, thanks! I’ll probably take you up on that offer.
Another question: the Durham website says the degree is 3 years full-time, 6 years part-time. But do I have to take a full 6 years to complete my thesis?

I don’t think so. I’ve heard that they encourage most of the time allotted, but that was for FT. I think the idea is once it’s ready, it’s ready.

Great, well I’ll let you know how the conversation with Dr. Wilkinson goes tomorrow. Put in a good word when you see him!

Congrats Ben on such a positive review. It’s always nice to see hard work rewarded and recognized by others.

Do you know if the debate DVD is available anywhere? I googled it but didn’t find it.
